Water Damage on Laptops, Workstations and Other Electronics
Follow These Tips
Fixing a laptop or computer that has had water spilled on it requires prompt action to minimize damage. Please note that these steps may not guarantee a complete fix, as water damage can be unpredictable and may vary depending on the extent of exposure. However, following these instructions can increase the chances of salvaging your laptop:
1. Act Quickly
Power off the laptop or computer immediately and disconnect it from any power source.
2. Remove External Devices
Unplug any external devices connected to the laptop or computer such as USB or external drives and any other connections such as printers, scanner etc.
3. Remove the Battery (If possible) on Laptops
If your laptop has a user removable batter you should take it out. If your laptop has an internal battery we recommend a professional repair.
4. Turn the Computer Upside Down
Place the laptop or workstation so as much Liquid can Drain as Possible.
5. Dry with a Lint-Free Cloth
Remove as much liquid as possible.
6. Use Compressed Air
You can blow air into any open ports, keyboard or other openings.
7. Use Rice
You can place the device in a container with uncooked rice and cover or seal the container. This will absorb remaining moisture. Leave the computer in the container for at least 24 hours. Some manufacturers do not recommend this process for their devices. Check your warranty and manufacturers manual for guidance.
8. Test the Computer
After the drying period test the laptop to see if it operates correctly.
9. Check the Manufacturer’s Warranty
Most manufacturers do not warranty this type of event, but it’s good to check anyway.
Tech Dispatch can help with any of the above steps or provide repair services if they are needed. We also have the ability to recover data from the device if its possible. Water damage is unpredictable and can cause immediate damage or damage over time.
